Full Legs in One Slot: Zoning, Passes and the Clock


Legs pay the rent. They're also the appointment most likely to run over, and the one a new technician quietly dreads.

A full-leg booking isn't an underarm scaled up. The heat load is different, the positioning is different, and somewhere around the second thigh the machine starts arguing with you.

Short answer: on a large-spot diode running at high repetition rate, both legs fit a standard slot for most fair-to-mid phototypes. Stretch the pulse for a Fitzpatrick V client or coarse hair and the same booking can double. It comes down to coverage rate, and you can calculate it.

Two Legs Is Roughly a Third of the Skin on the Body

Burn assessment gives a useful sense of scale. Under the rule of nines, as set out in the StatPearls review of the method, each adult leg is about 18% of total body surface. Both legs, then, are close to a third of the body's skin. You won't treat every square centimetre of that, but it explains why the slot behaves nothing like a chin.

Scale alone doesn't decide the booking, though. Coverage rate does.

Coverage rate, in one line of arithmetic

Take spot area, multiply by pulses per second, then knock off an allowance for the overlap your operator deliberately builds in. That's square centimetres per second. Divide the field by it and you have your treatment minutes, before consent, shaving and notes.

Work an example on the DL-07: its 12 x 12mm window covers 1.44 square centimetres a pulse. Fire ten a second, let a fifth of each pulse land on skin you've already heated, and you're clearing a bit over eleven square centimetres every second. Fire two a second and the same hand covers just over two. Same operator. Same leg. Five times the clock.

The pulse-width trap nobody puts on the booking screen

Here's where it bites. Our diode operating documentation couples pulse duration and repetition rate directly: short pulses allow the full ten per second, mid-range durations drop you into the low single digits, and past a hundred milliseconds you're down to one shot a second, full stop. That's not a settings preference. It's what the hardware will let you do.

So the clinically sensible call for a Fitzpatrick V client or a coarse-haired male leg — stretch the pulse, protect the epidermis — quietly costs you most of your coverage rate. Two clients book "full legs" and buy two completely different amounts of your room.

One caution about published parameter grids in general, ours included: the repetition rate you actually sustain at mid-range pulse widths depends on the client, the room and the loop temperature. Time your own machine rather than trust anybody's grid. Ten minutes with a stopwatch on a real thigh settles it.

Zone the Legs Before You Touch the Pedal

You can't sequence what you haven't named. Before the razor comes out, agree a zone map and use the same names in every record: anterior thigh, posterior thigh, knee, shin, calf, ankle-with-foot as one field. Six zones a leg is a reasonable scheme. Twelve named fields per client, then.

It sounds fussy. It stops three things: missed patches, arguments about what "full legs" included, and the mess that follows when you run out of clock.

Positioning: two turnovers, no more

Supine first. Do the anterior surfaces of both legs — anterior thigh, knee, shin, ankle and foot — before anybody moves. Then one turn to prone for posterior thigh and calf. Every extra flip costs a minute of shuffling, re-draping and re-cooling, and a client who has been asked to roll four times feels handled rather than treated.

Two areas want a lower hand. The back of the knee is thin, mobile skin over big vessels, and clients jump there. The shin and the bony ankle sit on almost no cushion, so heat feels sharper and the endpoint arrives sooner than it does on a thigh. Back the energy off at the boundary rather than pushing through and apologising afterwards.

Overlap: the difference between a pass and a smear

Sliding technique forgives an inconsistent hand, but only inside limits. Work in lanes, always in the same direction, with a deliberate overlap at each lane edge. No circles, no figure-of-eight wandering.

Why the discipline matters: missed lanes don't show up in the room. They show up at week three as stripes, and clients absolutely notice stripes on a leg they can see all day.

Published work backs the many-passes approach on this body area specifically. Braun's split-leg comparison in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology (2009) ran low-fluence, high-repetition multiple passes against high-fluence single-pass treatment on opposite legs, and reported comparable long-term reduction with the low-fluence arm faster and less painful. Barolet's twelve-month evaluation in Lasers in Surgery and Medicine (2012) followed the same low-fluence approach across skin types and found the reduction held up. Both are small studies - support for the technique, not a reduction rate to quote a client.

Passes, Endpoint and Running Out of Clock

Judge the endpoint zone by zone. Perifollicular oedema, the field warm and lightly pink — that's it, and a thigh will get there on a different pass count from a shin. Chasing the thigh's endpoint down at the ankle with thigh settings is how you produce your next burn.

Then the situation every busy room meets: you're twelve minutes from the next client and the calves aren't done. Do not rescue the clock by thinning passes across everything that's left. A field treated at half the heat regrows unevenly, the client reads it as failure, and you've spent consumables buying a complaint.

Stop at a zone boundary instead. Log exactly where you stopped, tell the client plainly, and open the next visit there. One under-treated zone is a scheduling error. The Machine Warms Up Before Your Technician Does

Large-area work is the load most likely to make hardware complain, and a full-leg glide at high repetition rate is the hardest thing you'll ask of the cooling loop all day.

The pre-cool that has to happen outside the slot

Our diode operating documentation is direct about start-up: run the cooling side first, wait several minutes, confirm the loop has reached its working temperature, and only then treat. It also gives an ambient band for the room in the high teens to mid twenties Celsius. On a full-leg booking that wait is dead time you're paying rent on, so start the machine while you're taking consent and photographs, not after.

What a mid-session alarm actually means

The interface has messages for high water temperature, low flow and no flow. They exist because the platform will throttle or stop rather than cook itself, and they surface most often in a hot room during a long continuous treatment. If your handpiece feels like it's fading on the second leg, that's the conversation the machine is trying to have with you.

Three habits keep it quiet. Air-condition the treatment room and keep it inside the stated band. Keep the water and filter schedule, which sits in the same running-cost bucket as everything else in the room's cost model. And wipe the sapphire between zones — carbonised stubble on the window scatters light and traps heat right where you don't want it.

Where Large-Area Clients Belong on the Day Sheet

Scheduling does more for large-area throughput than any setting change.

  • Early, or straight after lunch. Cool room, cool machine, a technician whose hand is still steady. The last slot on a Saturday is the worst possible home for full legs.
  • Never two in a row. Put a chin or an underarm between them. The break lets the loop recover, and the operator's forearm too.
  • Settle the shave before they arrive. An unshaven pair of legs eats your treatment window, and shaving in the room isn't what you sell. Say it at booking, repeat it in the reminder, and decide in advance whether you charge or reschedule.
  • Sell half-legs as a real product. Lower leg only fits a standard slot, prices cleanly and rebooks well. Plenty of clients want exactly that and are talked into more.
  • Price the occupied room minute, not the body area and not the shot. A long-pulse full-leg client occupies far more of your day than the price list admits.

Keep both legs on one course clock, too. Left leg this week and right leg next fortnight splits one client into two diverging schedules.

Frequently asked questions

Can a full-leg client honestly be finished in one standard slot?

Depends on three things, and you can work them out this afternoon. Spot area, achievable repetition rate at the pulse width that client needs, and how much of the leg you actually treat. A large square spot gliding at high repetition rate on a fair-skinned client with a short pulse gets there comfortably. The same client list on a small-spot platform, or a Fitzpatrick V client needing a stretched pulse, won't.

Should we split full legs across two appointments if we're short on time?

Only as a recovery, never as a plan. If you must stop, stop at a named zone boundary, record it, and start there next time. What you shouldn't do is put one leg on one schedule and the other on another — you'd end up running two courses on one person, with two sets of interval dates and a client who can see the difference.

How much overlap between lanes is right?

Enough that no strip of skin is left cold, and not so much that you're double-heating a zone that already reached its endpoint. Fixed direction, consistent lane width, window flat on the skin. If regrowth comes back striped, the hand speed was uneven or the lanes drifted — that's a training fix, not a fluence fix.

Does the treatment room really need air conditioning?

For a book built on legs and backs, yes. Our device documentation gives an ambient range for the machine, and sustained large-area work in a hot room is exactly the load that trips high-temperature warnings. A stalled handpiece with a client half-treated on the couch costs more than the air conditioning does.

Which platform suits a leg-heavy book?

Large spot, high repetition rate, contact cooling, no gel step. That's why most volume rooms build on a diode. A small-spot long-pulse device still earns its place for darker phototypes and vascular work, but if you run it as your main leg machine, price the extra room minutes honestly.
