Tanned Clients and Darker Skin: Reschedule, or Re-Parameter?


It's July. Your two o'clock walks in with a tan line that wasn't there four weeks ago. She's paid for the course, taken the afternoon off, and your tech is standing there with the handpiece.

Short answer first, and it runs in two stages. Clear whatever minimum interval your device's instructions set — ten days on our diode documentation. Then, and only then, judge by holding the treatment area against an unexposed control site on the same body; the calendar alone never clears anyone. Colour matches and the last reaction was normal: treat on the recorded settings. Mild, even, fading pigment: down-shift and re-patch first. Sunburn, peeling, patchy or fresh tan, or any self-tanner: reschedule.

One scoping note. This page is about clients whose colour has changed. A dark-skinned client at baseline is a different assessment, and it lives on our depilation machine operating guide along with the course protocol.

What a tan does to your treatment window

Melanin is your target. It's also sitting in the epidermis, in the way, soaking up light meant for a follicle. Your client just added competing chromophore between handpiece and target.

Our light-and-tissue training notes put the wavelength logic plainly. Below roughly 800nm, light is preferentially absorbed by melanin and scatters heavily in the epidermis. Above it, more of the beam survives the trip down. The same notes give the pulsed-light equivalent: longer-cutoff filter for a darker epidermis, shorter one for fair skin. None of that changes because the pigment arrived on holiday rather than at birth.

The epidermis runs its own clock

There's a teaching example in those notes worth sitting with — one hypothetical case at a single fixed energy density, not a spec for any device. At that fixed density, shorten the pulse past about 99ms and the epidermis is damaged before the follicle is finished; hold it at 100ms and the follicle still coagulates while the epidermis survives. Longer pulse, safer epidermis — and that's why epidermal cooling exists.

Where a margin runs that thin, a tan doesn't add risk gradually. It eats what little was there. Which is why a 2018 review in the American Journal of Clinical Dermatology, on hair reduction in Fitzpatrick IV to VI, calls longer wavelengths a key element of the protocol rather than a nice-to-have.

"How long since the sun?" is the wrong question

Clients want a number. Biology doesn't supply one.

Why the calendar lies to you

Juzeniene and Moan, writing in Dermato-Endocrinology in 2012, split the tanning response into phases. Immediate pigment darkening fades within hours. Persistent pigment darkening follows a heavier UVA dose and hangs around for days or weeks. Delayed tanning — new melanin synthesis — develops three to seven days after UVB exposure and then, in their words, remains for weeks.

Read that with a booking sheet in your hand. A client who flew home ten days ago may be darker today than the afternoon she landed. "It's been two weeks" tells you almost nothing about the melanin in her skin right now.

The device minimum still binds, though. Our DL-07 page says no tanning for at least ten days beforehand, straight out of the diode manual. Clear that floor first. Ten days gone and the colour still doesn't match her control site? Still not treating.

Judge the pigment, not the diary

Every client carries their own control sample. Inner upper arm. Buttock. Under the bra line. Somewhere the sun didn't reach.

Hold the treatment field against that untanned site. See a difference and the tan hasn't gone, whatever the calendar says. A tan line is the same evidence, more conveniently.

Photograph both, every visit, same corner of the room, same lamp, away from window light. Fitzpatrick typing describes a lifetime of skin behaviour, not the pigment she's carrying this Tuesday.

Self-tanner belongs in its own bucket

Ask about it by name. Clients don't file mousse and gradual-tan moisturiser under "tanning", so an open question gets nothing. Sunless tanner stains dead skin, it isn't melanin, and no fluence drop makes brown stratum corneum a good place to fire. The American Academy of Dermatology's preparation guidance tells patients not to use it before treatment. You wait for it to shed — there's no down-shifted version of this call.

Reschedule or adjust: the three outcomes

Three boxes, not a vibe. Every tanned client lands in one.

  1. Treat as booked. Device minimum wait already cleared, field matches the control site, no tan line, nothing new reported, last visit's reaction normal. Proceed on the recorded settings.
  2. Treat down-shifted, after a fresh test patch. Mild, even, clearly fading pigment. Drop the fluence, stretch the pulse, move to the longest wavelength or filter the platform offers, lean harder on cooling. Patch at the settings you actually intend to use, and read it late rather than at the door — how to run a test patch that means something covers siting and timing.
  3. Reschedule. Sunburn, peeling, patchy or fresh tan, any self-tanner, or a client who can't give you a straight account of the last month. Also when your tech isn't sure. Uncertainty is a valid reason, and juniors need to hear that before they need it.

What a down-shift actually looks like

Our E-light parameter sheet puts it in two lines: start from the initial number for the skin type, then adjust on the basis of the client's reaction. It adds a regional note — where a population habitually sits between type IV and type V, work from the type V column. A tanned client is a client sitting between two types. Round toward the darker one.

The endpoint you're reading is perifollicular erythema and edema, which is how the Indian Journal of Dermatology, Venereology and Leprology review by Arsiwala and Majid describes the target. Immediate greying or whitening, blistering, or pain wildly out of proportion means you stop, and you don't treat that day at any setting.

Climbing back needs a rule too, or she sits on holiday fluence until Christmas. Redo the control-site comparison every visit; don't run on your memory of July. Only once the field matches again does the energy move. Then one variable per session, one fixed step at a time, step size written into your protocol so two techs do the same thing. Going back across platforms — Nd:YAG to diode — or jumping more than one step means a fresh test patch first.

The rebooking policy is part of the protocol

Put the rebooking terms in the consent form at signup: disclosed 48 hours ahead, the slot moves free; turn up tanned unannounced and the deposit goes. Then ask the screening question on the confirmation call.

Our long-pulse platform manual lists sun exposure among the hair removal contraindications, and it names the specific consequence: a hypopigmented treatment site. Pale patches, where you fired.

When the answer is 1064nm Nd:YAG, not a smaller number

Arsiwala and Majid are blunt about platform choice: long-pulsed Nd:YAG remains the recommended option in very dark individuals and tanned patients. Our LN-01 manual leads its hair indication with Fitzpatrick IV to VI for the same reason.

Two things have to sit together here. Changing wavelength does not cancel a contraindication: the three-way screen at the top of this page is still the only way in, and the Nd:YAG widens only what counts as treatable inside the settled and even box. It never authorises fresh or patchy tan, sunburn, peeling or self-tanner — those still reschedule, on any platform. And the tension is real, so we won't paper over it for you: the published reviews name long-pulsed 1064nm as the option in tanned patients, while our own long-pulse manual lists sun exposure among the hair removal contraindications. Anything that departs from the instructions for use is a written decision by the client's supervising clinician, not a technician's.

The trade is real. 1064nm is poorly absorbed by epidermal melanin, which is the point — and poorly absorbed by hair melanin too, which is the cost. More energy, better cooling, more patience. Don't guess the slot length: time a full-leg diode session and a full-leg Nd:YAG in your own room, then build the template from the ratio you measured.

Don't over-correct either. That same review names suboptimal fluence as one of the most important causes of poor response in dark skin, and puts published dark-skin working fluences roughly in the 20 to 24 J/cm2 band against 30 to 35 for lighter types. Direction of travel, not a setting for your machine; your own instructions for use win.

Cooling carries the rest. That review calls cooling devices crucial for epidermal protection in types III to V, which is why a chilled contact window matters more on tanned skin than on anyone else. The DL-07 in sliding mode keeps that contact continuous — different protection from a cold blast between shots.

Running the book through summer

Load courses where the sun isn't

Sell course starts in autumn. Give the desk the arithmetic: a leg course beginning in September finishes before next season's first beach.

Salvage the courses that run into July anyway

Better moves, cheapest first:

  • Swap summer sessions onto covered areas. Underarms, bikini, back and chest stay under clothing; park the lower legs until September.
  • Move that client's summer sessions to the Nd:YAG — only for clients the three-way screen already puts in box one or box two, on the terms set out above — and keep the interval the growth cycle dictates. Changing platform means a fresh test patch and a baseline photo — build it into the slot.
  • Run a down-shifted pass with a longer pulse, accept slower progress, and say so at the time, not afterwards. Once her control site matches again, climb back by the rule above.

What getting it wrong actually costs

A burn isn't one bad appointment. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation on a darker-skinned client can sit there for months, and in those months she isn't paying for the rest of the course. Our diode manual's aftercare section calls for sun-block cream for at least ten days after treatment; our pulsed-light test instructions say a distinctly red reaction means the energy comes down appreciably. Blistering, weeping or anything not settling goes to your supervising clinician, not a phone call — what to do in the days after a burn or a pigment change covers it.

Sign this off as its own line on the training record. Not "can operate the machine" — can screen a tanned client and say no. Make it signable: a set number of tanned-client screenings under supervision, senior signature and date in the box. Unsigned means that tech doesn't see a tanned client alone. How long should a client wait after a beach holiday?

Clear whatever minimum the device instructions set — ten days on our diode documentation — then judge by colour: the treatment field has to match an unexposed site on the same body. Published work on tanning kinetics has delayed tanning developing three to seven days after UVB and persisting for weeks, so someone can be at their darkest well after getting home.

Can we just lower the energy and treat anyway?

Sometimes, and only after a test patch you actually waited on. A mild, even, fading tan with a normal previous reaction is a candidate: lower fluence, longer pulse, longest available wavelength, harder cooling. Sunburn, peeling, patchy tan or self-tanner is not — no setting rescues those.

Is a diode ever the right call for a tanned client?

For a light, settled tan on a client you've treated before, with strong contact cooling and a conservative down-shift, yes. Once the tan is fresh, uneven or heavy, the published reviews point at long-pulsed 1064nm — and so does the indication list in our own Nd:YAG documentation.
